Paul Safar Black ShirtPaul Safar is a LIVING composer of “Art Music” - active listening, concert or theatre based music. His original compositions continue the western classical music tradition as well as incorporate his love of jazz, pop and rock styles. Paul welcomes commissions and collaboration.

Paul Safar and Nancy WoodAs a performer, Paul works as a solo pianist as well as a frequent accompanist of soprano Nancy Wood. Nancy and Paul have been presenting premiere pieces of contemporary composers through Cherry Blossom Musical Arts' “Art Music Live in the 21st Century” series. In a slightly different vein, Paul and Nancy lead a fun, grooving group called “The Love Truffle” (piano, bass, drums, sax with vocals by Paul and Nancy) which plays jazz infused world music and reinvented Beatles songs. Keep an ear out for them at Eugene's Saturday Market and outdoor summer concerts.

On very rare occasion in my life (probably just three times) I, as a composer, have sat down and had a short piece of music come out almost completely in one swoop. It's as if the emotion of the moment gives something almost fully formed. I experienced a glimpse of this on election night last November. Once it was certain what the results really were, I knew I needed to either go outside for a long walk or sit down at the piano. I chose to do the latter and this is what came out:  "11-8-16 (just shy of midnight)". I mostly felt deep sadness that night. I still feel that sometimes now for sure but also sense a hope that things are unfolding as they should into an ultimately positive direction. Listen here: 11-8-16 (just shy of midnight)
